The End of a Great Quarter
03/31/2006
This week marked the end of
the quarter and with it came extra volatility as many institutional
investors performed their end-of-quarter window
dressing. One example of increased volatility was Chaparral
Steel Company (CHAP). For the week, the stock was up 12% through
Wednesday, then fell 3.4% over the next two days, despite
a lack of company-specific news. For the week, the steel company
was up 8.3%.
Small and mid-cap stocks remained
the place to be this week as they posted gains while large
companies, as represented by the S&P 500, lost ground
(-0.6%). Small-cap stocks performed especially well during
the quarter.
Next week features the March
Employment Report. Ironically, if the results are too favorable,
the stock market may react negatively in anticipation of further
Fed tightening which is meant to temper the economy's growth.
